The city of Ostrava in the Czech Republic will build a new 1,300 seat concert hall and 475 seat chamber hall. Both halls will feature excellent acoustic solution for both acoustic and amplified performances. Chamber hall adds flexible layout for wide range of cultural and social events. The new hall is sited adjacent to the existing 20th century Cultural Center. The concept of a “perfect acoustic instrument in its case” is proposed for Ostrava’s Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra, the leading Czech orchestra for commissioning Contemporary Music. The Concert Hall faces the existing Park to the North, thus minimizing noise from the main boulevard to the South. A new entrance hovers over the Esplanade and transports the public above the historic House of Culture into a sky-lit lobby for the Concert Hall. The dramatic complimentary contrast of old and new creates a Cultural Landmark for Ostrava. The new architecture points to the future of the city of Ostrava.   Design Team: Architecture Acts Hana Petrikova, Martin Kropac, Tullio Polisi, David Lasek, Klara Zugarova, Miarianna Antoniadou, Hana Hucikova, Tiziana Tasca, Alessia Capone Steven Holl Architects Steven Holl, Dimitra Tsachrelia, Olaf Schmidt, Lirong Tan, Sarah Schlegelmilch, Paul Hazelet location: Moravia – Silesia, CZ status: Schematic […]

The Third Symmetry

A space exists between two existing buildings – a medieval castle and its literal copy realized much later. While the original was composed using strict baroque lateral symmetry aligned with the grand arrival parkway, the later addition re-oriented the symmetry of the compound by 90 degrees. The ambition of our new insertion is not to compete with these two systems. Instead our contemporary layer presents a novel concept – a radial symmetry that encompasses not only the nearby points of interest but also the regional dominant – an empire style chapel at the edge of the forest, at the end of a grand ash alley – still an active spiritual path of the region. Within such new system of arrangement, we propose a public amenities such as cafe, pool, sauna and other wellness programs. A covered promenade leads to the renovated pond. Along the path one can see also outdoor playgrounds, picknick areas and tree compositions. All these new services add value to total of 48 new condominiums located partially in the historic buildings and in the newly constructed garden villas.   location: Bohemia status: Schematic Design in collaboration with Hana Hučíková, Klára Zugarová & Domenico Busa

location: Prague status: Competition   in collaboration with Hana Hučíková Tullio Polisi, Karolina Hahn, Beatriz García Lapaz   No House should ever be on a hill or on anything. It should be of the hill. Belonging to it. Hill and house should live together each the happier for the other.  Frank Lloyd Wright We present the New Congress Center Prague – the new addition that embodies the natural and long awaited evolution of the cultural landmark and that utilizes to the fullest its unique location in the center of Prague. Understanding its role in our culture, historical context and architectural qualities, we carefully add a new component. One that does not compete with the existing but rather complements it, enhances its value and offers new spaces as well as more efficient, comfortable and logical interconnections. One that creates a new public space. One that attracts a new crowd and facilitates interactions. We raise the public platform on the South by one level, forming a solid base for the existing building, the valuable monument of its era. At the same time, a new lively public plaza emerges, superior to the vehicular level and with new pace and amazing views – new horizon. […]
